If you walk into any busy GRP fabrication workshop and the first thing you notice is the dust, this can represent a significant health and safety risk.
In high-volume fibreglass manufacturing environments, the fine white haze becomes part of daily life unless robust control measures are in place, settling on benches and machinery, clinging to walls, and hanging visibly in the air during heavy sanding operations.
Whether a facility is producing composite vehicle panels, marine components, aerospace structures or industrial housings, the sanding and finishing stages create enormous volumes of airborne materials.

In the past, GRP dust was often viewed as an irritating housekeeping issue. In reality, it represents a far more serious operational challenge, as recognised today in modern sanding facilities. Airborne particles affect worker health, contaminate sensitive finishing processes and gradually damage productivity.
Manufacturers are increasingly recognising that effective dust extraction is a core part of maintaining quality, efficiency and workforce wellbeing, as outlined by the Health and Safety Executive.
Glass reinforced plastic remains one of the most widely used composite materials across UK manufacturing. Its lightweight strength, corrosion resistance and versatility make it invaluable in sectors ranging from construction and transport to aerospace and renewable energy. However, machining and finishing these materials creates significant volumes of airborne contamination.
Cutting, sanding, grinding and trimming all release microscopic particles into the surrounding workspace. Some remain suspended in the air for extended periods, while others settle across nearby equipment, workpieces and walkways which creates two major problems: the first is workforce exposure. GRP dust contains glass fibres, cured resin particles and fillers that can irritate the skin, eyes and respiratory system; the second is contamination, as fine airborne particles settle onto gel coats, painted surfaces and laminating areas, leading to expensive rework or rejected components.
Many facilities still rely heavily on respiratory protective equipment to manage employee exposure. Full-face respirators, disposable masks and heavy protective clothing are often treated as the primary defence against airborne contamination.
While PPE certainly plays an important role, it doesn’t address the root cause of the issue. Workers carrying out detailed tasks while wearing restrictive respirators can suffer fatigue more quickly. Heat build-up inside masks becomes uncomfortable during long shifts, especially in enclosed production spaces and warm environments. Over time, this affects productivity.
Anyone who has worked around fibreglass also understands the unpleasant reality of tiny glass fibres embedding themselves into the skin and causing itching and discomfort. Eye irritation is equally common in poorly controlled environments.
Under COSHH regulations and HSG258 guidance, employers have a legal responsibility to adequately control exposure to hazardous airborne substances generated during manufacturing processes.
Although glass fibre fragments are often too large to penetrate the deepest regions of the lungs, the cured polyester resins, vinyl esters and fine fillers contained within sanding dust remain a serious irritant.
Repeated exposure can lead to chronic respiratory conditions including occupational asthma, bronchitis and long-term lung irritation. Workers exposed to airborne composite dust over extended periods may also develop severe skin dermatitis and persistent eye irritation.
Studies have also raised concerns regarding the potential long-term respiratory damage associated with prolonged exposure to composites. The HSE emphasises that respiratory protection should never be the sole method of control where airborne contaminants can be captured at source.
Effective dust management should first focus on engineering controls that remove contaminants from the environment before workers are exposed.
One of the most effective solutions for high-volume GRP finishing environments is the use of modular walk-in extraction booths powered by cross-draught airflow technology. These systems draw large volumes of air horizontally across the work area, pulling particles away from the operator’s breathing zone before they can spread throughout the workshop. Captured directly through perforated extraction walls, they are then filtered internally before clean air is returned to the workspace. Workers experience dramatically lower exposure, while surrounding production areas remain cleaner and easier to maintain.
Cross-draught systems also help protect product quality by preventing airborne contamination from spreading into adjacent laminating or painting areas.

From a workforce perspective, cleaner air and reduced skin irritation contribute directly to improved morale and retention. This matters more than ever in sectors where experienced composite technicians remain difficult to recruit and retain.
