The ancient craft of stonemasonry dates back at least 12,000 years, evolving from a small-scale cottage sector into a major industry worth £3.7 billion a year to the UK economy.
Helping to shape the British landscape for thousands of years, its origins date back to 10,000 BC – the techniques used by ancient craftsmen to transform rough stone into precise structures are still practiced by modern masons today.

A stonemason is a skilled craftsperson who works with different materials including sandstone, limestone, slate, granite and marble on a diverse range of building projects. Much of the National Trust’s work involves conserving, maintaining and repairing heritage buildings, with a fine example being Bodiam Castle in Sussex, where the Trust’s conservation team cares for the ancient monument, built in 1383, on a daily basis to protect it for future generations.
Sawyer masons are skilled in the use of diamond-tipped tools to refine the raw and rough chunks of stone into the required shapes, while carver masons have the artistic abilities to create designs and patterns on the stones.
While the basic skillset of a stonemason remains the same, in that they cut and shape rocks into the required designs, the industry has, of course, changed massively since its first incarnation in the Neolithic period known as the Stone Age in around 10,000 BC. This era saw the evolution of the first humans who learned how to arrange rocks to build shelters, changing from nomadic societies to fixed settlements.
One of the world’s earliest known trades, stone masonry dates from a time when animals were first domesticated and people began farming the land. As the traditional hunter-gatherer tribes evolved into putting down roots and working in agriculture, permanent settlements began springing up to house the growing populations. The stonemasons soon learned how to use fire, creating materials such as plasters, mortars and quicklime to make solid structures for housing.
They developed their skills by using primitive tools to break and shape rocks, using a mixture of stone, mud and straw to make weatherproof homes.
Stonemasons were working all over the world, in different societies, from prehistoric Europe to Ancient Egypt as the craft grew. Fast forward from 10,000 BC, when the human race began living in stone dwellings instead of caves, and initially simple houses became luxury homes. Stonemasons were in great demand.
Some of the landscape’s most famous triumphs were built thanks to their skills, such as Egypt’s great pyramids; the historic temples of Greece; Central America’s step pyramids; Persian palaces; the Sumerians’ famous sculptures depicting gods and kings; and Ancient Rome’s Colosseum and other amazing structures.
The ancient Romans and Greeks contributed to the development of stone masonry, with the Romans advancing the use of arches and vaults to build more stable, larger structures such as aqueducts and amphitheatres, and the Greeks perfecting the use of marble to build elaborate temples. Across Europe, castles were built for hundreds of years, while the Norman period, in around 1000 AD, saw the first great European cathedrals being constructed.
A stonemasons’ hierarchy evolved during the Medieval period, with apprentices being indentured to their masters to learn a skilled trade. At the next level, journeymen travelled with their masters to work on projects across the country, while Master Masons were at the top of the chain and had a high skills level.
During the Renaissance period in Europe, from the 14th to 17th century, stonework differed from earlier periods, as the trend was to use limestone and marble, leading to a renewed focus on classical Roman and Greek designs, resulting in more refined and decorative sculptures and structures.
During the Industrial Revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries, the rise of mechanised stone cutting tools transformed the industry, allowing for more precise and faster stone shaping. Iron and steel began to be used alongside stone in the construction sector.
Using stone in modern building applications is still popular, with architects realising its benefits for facades, flooring and countertops, as well as for general building structures. Stone is considered both a luxury and a practical choice, as it can be fashioned into so many diverse shapes and designs.
Today’s stonemasons have skills such as reading detailed blueprints to determine the design and progress of a project, using mathematics to accurately measure distances and organise materials, but they must also operate under strict safety guidelines monitored by the Health and Safety Executive in the UK.
