Woodworking Dust Extraction: A Safety Essential

Once developed, occupational asthma can be lifelong.

Many modern woodworking materials such as treated timber, MDF and finishes release harmful fumes and dust when cut or sanded. These can cause immediate symptoms like dizziness and headaches, as well as longer-term neurological and respiratory complications with repeated exposure.

Skin and eye irritation are also common in poorly ventilated workshops. Dust particles settle on exposed skin and can cause dryness, itching and dermatitis. Eyes are especially vulnerable, with fine dust leading to redness, discomfort and infections over time.

There is also a significant safety risk due to wood dust being highly combustible. When suspended in the air, it can ignite with surprising force. A small spark from a power tool or electrical fault can trigger a dust explosion, putting both people and property at serious risk. This makes effective dust management not only a health priority, but also a critical safety measure.

For mixed dust environments, the stricter hardwood limit applies.

Meeting these limits means applying recognised principles of good practice, ensuring exposure remains below legal thresholds and reducing it as far as reasonably practicable. It also involves recognising that settled dust is not harmless. In fact, it often contains the finest and most dangerous particles, which can easily become airborne again.
