Welding’s most Bizarre and Creative Projects

If you think welding is all about joining metal in vehicle manufacturing, or even repairing a lawnmower, you’re correct to a degree. However, buried deep within welding’s more practical purposes lies a subculture of artists, scientists and DIY enthusiasts crafting projects that are both bizarre and incredibly creative.

From gravity-defying monowheels and tricycles straight out of Mad Max to piston-headed humanoids and a full-size motorised sofa, some welding projects showcase the incredible power of imagination, combined with precision, planning and skills.

Welding’s most Bizarre and Creative Projects

One thing all these projects have in common is the need for effective PPE and a high quality dust extraction system to keep our nation’s creative welders safe while they craft their weird and wonderful artefacts. Whether you’re welding works of art in a private workshop, or toiling on an auto production line, the need for health and safety protection is equally as important.

Monowheel bicycle: a feat of engineering

Let’s start with something that looks like it rolled straight out of a sci-fi film: the monowheel bicycle. This is basically a giant spinning ring, with the rider precariously squeezed into the centre, hoping good balance will prevail and prevent them from going head over heels down the next hill! Despite their impractical design, including the challenges of cornering, monowheels are serious feats of engineering.

It takes an incredible level of precision welding to build the frame, keep the wheel structurally sound and ensure the rider isn’t vibrated into another dimension. When you’re spending many painstaking hours on perfecting the design, it’s easy to let welding fumes build up. Always use a good dust extraction system, such as an AirBench downdraught bench, to keep the air clear.

Even the two-wheeled bicycle can be a challenging welding project, especially if you’re planning a custom bike frame made from aluminium or chromoly. TIG welding skills and heat control are essential. Incidentally, these are not necessarily rideable bikes – we’re talking works of art that can be proudly displayed in your garden, such as those created by YouTube star Josh Welton, a writer, welder and artist famous for his online tutorials on bicycle sculptures.

Mad Max wants his trike back!

What kind of person finds a rusty old 1976 Harley Davidson in a barn and thinks of turning it into a three-wheeled apocalypse-ready chariot? The answer is a team of motor enthusiasts, welders and artists in Sweden, who created a Mad Max-inspired tricycle in 2021. Showcased on the Moto Riders Universe website, the vehicle was part vintage restoration, part futuristic dream vehicle. With exposed chains, oversized tyres and plenty of rugged metal, it’s a tribute to their combined creative genius.

Sit like a king

We’ve seen chairs that wouldn’t look out of place in the Thunderdome, decked out with repurposed wrenches, chains and more intimidating spikes. These welding projects blur the line between furniture and artistry. Take a look on Pinterest and there are hundreds of futuristic welded chairs, featuring detailed cutting, ornamental welds and careful finishing.

South Yorkshire sculptor Bob Campbell, alias Stig, keeps the area’s steel heritage alive with his amazing creations, crafted from reclaimed and reused components from abandoned industrial machinery. Taking recycling to a whole new level, his functional sculptures have a rugged beauty and a Game of Thrones feel.

Piston People: engines with personality

Piston People sculptures are delightful anthropomorphic art pieces made from old engine parts, combining humour, mechanical knowledge and precision welding. Getting facial expressions out of pistons and connecting rods takes talent and imagination. An old piston, a spark plug, a couple of wrenches and a car filter opening tool can be turned into a menacing skull head statue described as “part Mad Max, part Halloween”.

The result of precision TIG welding, the unique intricate figurines are pieces of sculpture made from scrap metal that can spice up any desk or bookshelf. Making Piston People has become a popular DIY project for welders, who report “seeing little metal characters everywhere” once they get in the zone!

As with any type of welding, AirBench dust extraction systems and weld fume extractors provide the ultimate safe setup for both hobbyists and professionals.

Expanding our definition of the word “car”

Have you ever dreamed of building your own car from scratch? Engineer and artist Jay Jarvie did more than just dream – in 2023, he picked up a welding torch and got to work, determined to create something truly unique: the Arete Supercar. Turning a pile of parts into a rolling piece of art, Jay took fans behind the scenes on his Builder Creator YouTube channel, where he shared the entire journey of building his unique supercar.

For Jay and many others with passion projects, spending thousands of hours and lots of money is part of the reward, as the whole process of making a motorised masterpiece brings them joy. From custom frames and brackets to a fully functioning engine, the level of skill and patience required is jaw-dropping. If you’re going to be welding for hours on a project like this, you need ergonomic tools and a fume-free zone for long-duration work.

Introducing the motorised sofa

At first glance, it’s just a regular sofa – but upon closer inspection, you’ll notice built-in speakers, control panels and possibly a lawnmower engine underneath. Fully motorised, it may not be practical, but it’s certainly genius!

Believe it or not, building motorised furniture has become something of a global hobby and even a sport, with races and wild competitions popping up around the world. Actual couches, armchairs and dining tables can move at great speed along the road, each one a feat of creative welding.

One of the most legendary examples is Perry Watkins’ incredible vehicle, called Fast Food, comprising a full Queen Anne-style dining table, complete with six chairs. It holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest piece of furniture ever built. Back in 2010 at Santa Pod Raceway, it hit a jaw-dropping average speed of 113.8 mph, thanks to a modified 1994 Reliant Scimitar Sabre engine hidden underneath the elegant setup. It’s the perfect mix of engineering, humour and sheer creativity – who says your sofa can’t also be a race car?

Creativity needs clean air

Behind every wild welding project is a workspace that hopefully doesn’t look like the aftermath of a fireworks accident. Precision welding, especially when building something that technically shouldn’t exist, demands a clean, organised and safe environment. Precautions should be taken when tackling creative welding projects like these. Safety comes first, with effective personal protective equipment, good ventilation and awareness of potential hazards being absolutely essential.

For fume-free, ergonomic workspaces specifically designed for complex welding and fabrication projects; Airbench downdraught benches and cross-draught systems effectively capture fumes and dust at source, keeping your workspace clean, compliant and comfortable, so you can focus on being creative.

Welding isn’t just about structural integrity: it’s also about self-expression and even turning junk into treasure.
